Coast Guard Halts Gulf of Alaska Search for Missing Five People

Rescue efforts for five people who were on a fishing boat that capsized in dangerous water are now over. Because of the rough conditions in the Gulf of Alaska near Point Couverden, a huge search effort that covered more than 108 square nautical miles was launched.

The search was hampered by bad winter weather, such as heavy snow and strong winds, even though the Coast Guard sent out many of its vehicles and individuals volunteered to help. This event has had a big impact on the maritime community and shows how dangerous it is for fishing crews to work in Alaska’s waters.

Initial Distress Call

Early on Sunday morning, the 50-foot fishing boat Wind Walker sent out a mayday call, which set off the drama. USA Today says the crew said their ship was flipping over near Point Couverden, which is southwest of Juneau. The location of the distress signal in the Icy Strait was confirmed when an emergency radio beacon was turned on. Even though Coast Guard watchstanders tried to get in touch with the vessel again, they didn’t respond.

Weather Challenges

The search teams had to deal with terrible weather that made it very hard to save people. Six-foot waves were dangerous because of winds of 45 to 60 mph. The area was still under a winter storm warning, and the National Weather Service said the warning would last until Tuesday because the conditions were so bad. These harsh elements made the search process a lot harder.

After the distress call, many rescue vehicles were sent to the scene right away. The state ferry Hubbard was the first to arrive after picking up the Coast Guard’s urgent marine broadcast. A crew from an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter and a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium joined the effort from stations close by. The Coast Guard’s ability to quickly respond to emergencies was shown by the comprehensive response.

Coast Guard Assets Deployed

The search was made bigger by adding the Healy and the Douglas Denman, two Coast Guard cutters. These boats were very important in covering a large search area. Their deployment showed off all of the Coast Guard’s tools that can be used in Alaskan waters in case of a maritime emergency.

During the long search, teams found evidence in the search area that was very worrying. Seven suits for swimming in cold water were found floating in the water. There were also two strobe lights found, but neither the crew nor the ship could be found. These discoveries gave us important information about how bad the event was.

Search Area Coverage

Teams searched more than 108 square nautical miles of ocean as part of the search and rescue operation. This in-depth coverage showed how big and hard the rescue effort was. The search area included the rough seas around Point Couverden and the areas that were close by.

The fact that Couverden was at the southeast end of Couverden Island was important to the search. This small island in Haines Borough is a fishing spot that is far away but busy. The location’s geography and the fact that it was winter made things more difficult for search teams.

Official Response

Chief Warrant Officer James Koon felt very sorry for the people who were hurt by what happened. The search was called off after all the work that had been done turned up no signs of survivors. The Coast Guard stuck to its promise to start searching again if new information came in.

The event has sent shockwaves through Alaska’s maritime community. Not only has the death hurt the families involved, but it has also hurt the fishing industry as a whole. It’s important to remember how dangerous it is for fishing crews to work in Alaskan waters after this happened.

Ongoing Investigation

The Coast Guard is still trying to find out more about what happened. They have asked anyone with relevant information to get in touch with the watchstanders in Sector Southeast Alaska. The goal of this ongoing investigation is to find out what happened before this terrible event.
