King Arthur

King Arthur is a legendary British leader from the late 5th and early 6th centuries. He’s famous for his Knights of the Round Table and his magical sword, Excalibur. Many people believe Arthur defended Britain against the Saxon invaders. However, there’s no solid proof he ever existed. The earliest mentions of Arthur come from stories written hundreds of years after he supposedly lived.

Robin Hood

Robin Hood is a well-known outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the less fortunate. He’s usually said to have lived in Sherwood Forest during the time of King Richard I. But there’s no clear evidence that Robin Hood was a real person. Stories about him first appeared in ballads and poems long after he was supposed to have lived.

Mulan

Mulan Mulan is a Chinese warrior woman who disguised herself as a man to take her father’s place in the army. Her story is told in an ancient Chinese poem called “The Ballad of Mulan.” While the poem is real, there’s no historical evidence that Mulan herself existed. The story might be based on folk tales or legends rather than a real person.

William Tell

William Tell is a Swiss folk hero known for shooting an apple off his son’s head with an arrow. He’s said to have lived in the early 14th century and helped lead a rebellion against Austrian rule. But there’s no proof that Tell was a real person. The first written account of his story appeared about 200 years after he supposedly lived.

Homer

Homer is the ancient Greek poet who was said to have written the Iliad and the Odyssey. These epic poems are some of the oldest works of Western literature. But we don’t know for sure if Homer was a real person. Some scholars think many poets created the poems over time, not just one man.

John Henry

 John Henry is an American folk hero known for his strength and skill as a steel-driving man. Legend says he raced against a steam-powered hammer and won but died from the effort. While there might have been real steel drivers named John Henry, the specific story told in the ballad is likely a mix of fact and fiction.

Prester John

Prester John was a legendary Christian king who was said to rule a wealthy kingdom somewhere in the East. European leaders in the Middle Ages believed in his existence and sent expeditions to find him. But no evidence of Prester John or his kingdom was ever found. The story was likely based on rumors and wishful thinking.

Hiawatha

Hiawatha is a legendary Native American leader who was associated with the formation of the Iroquois Confederacy. While there may have been a real person named Hiawatha, many stories about him are likely symbolic or exaggerated. The famous poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow mixes different Native American traditions and isn’t historically accurate.

Pythagoras

Sun Wukong (The Monkey King)

The Monkey King is the protagonist in the Chinese novel entitled Journey to the West.” He’s a magical monkey with incredible powers who goes on adventures. While the book is based on a real journey by a Buddhist monk, Sun Wukong is a fictional character. His stories come from a mix of Chinese folklore and the author’s imagination.

Confucius

Confucius is a Chinese philosopher whose teachings shaped East Asian culture for thousands of years. His ideas about morality and good government are still important today. But we don’t know much about Confucius’s real life. His followers wrote down stories about him long after he died. Some experts think parts of his biography might be made up.

Lycurgus

The lawgiver who supposedly created Sparta’s unique way of life. Ancient writers said he set up Sparta’s tough training system and rules. But there’s no clear evidence that Lycurgus ever existed. The Spartans didn’t write much about their history. The stories about Lycurgus might be a way of explaining how Sparta’s culture began.

Laozi

Laozi was the founder of Taoism and the supposed author of the Tao Te Ching, an essential book of Chinese philosophy still read today. But we don’t know if Laozi was a real person. His name means “Old Master” and might refer to more than one teacher. Some people think many different authors wrote the Tao Te Ching over time.
